What is plain flour?
Plain flour is a blend of hard and soft wheat, once ground its white and has a soft texture. Plain flour has a low gluten level (ranging between 9% and 12%) but it isn’t entirely gluten-free. As it has been refined its better for lighter baking like cakes and pastries like fairy cakes, cupcakes and scones
Converting plain flour
Plain flour indicates that it doesn’t contain a rising agent. This means you will need to add your own! It’s incredibly simple to turn plain flour to self raising, you only need three ingredients; baking powder, salt and of course plain flour. Simply combine… 4g of baking powder for every 150g of plain flour, it’s as simple as that!
When converting cups to grams remember that one cup of plain flour is the equivalent to 120g.
One of our favourite uses for plain flour is for crêpes (French pancakes), making them is almost as enjoyable as eating them.
- Combine 100g plain flour with 2 large eggs and 300ml milk in a big bowl and whisk until a smooth batter.
- Heat a flat pan with some butter or oil and add the mixture coating the pan.
- Cook for 1 min on each side or until golden!
Store your crêpes in a warm oven to keep them warm until you are ready to serve them. Enjoy with your choice of topping, we suggest lemon juice and caster sugar!
