Baking parchment
Baking parchment is a coated paper which is commonly used for baking and roasting.
Baking parchment is a paper which has been coated is a heat withstanding silicone, it is commonly used for baking and roasting. It is also non-stick, grease resistant and moisture resistant. All these attributes make baking parchment super versatile. It can be cut into sheets to line a simple square baking tray to a round cake tin. Baking parchment is sold in rolls that come in boxes. Once opened the box acts as a dispenser. It usually comes with a cutter for ease of use. You will be able to find it in most supermarkets in the UK.
A good way to line cake tins is to measure the height of the sides and the circumference and cut one long strip. To line the bottom you can trace around the base and cut out a disc the same size as your cake tin. To get the paper to stick to the sides you can lightly brush the tin with butter or an unflavoured oil.
If you want to line a baking tray and you don’t have any baking parchment you can use tin foil as an alternative. Bear in mind you cannot use tin foil for lining cake tins.
You can also buy a reusable, nonstick silicone baking mat. They work fantastically and you can use them over and over again!
Baking parchment vs greaseproof paper
The difference is that baking parchment has a non-stick surface while greaseproof paper doesn’t. Greeseproof paper is more commonly used for food storage while baking parchment is used more for cooking. They are both similar products so you can use baking parchment instead of greaseproof paper.
