Mixed spice is a warm and aromatic spice used a lot in baking.
Mixed spice is a powdered spice mix made up of a few ground spices. It most commonly contains ground cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. It may also sometimes contain caraway, ginger, cloves, coriander or caraway. It is primarily used in baking as it has a warm, aromatic smell. It is a common ingredient in cakes, biscuits, cupcakes, cookies, gingerbread and loaf cakes like banana bread. It can also be used as a seasoning in savoury recipes.
Mixed spice substitutes
If you can’t find mixed spice you can make your own! Simply combine equal parts of cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. You can also add extra spices to taste!
