Pepperoni is an Italian-American invention, similar to salami. Pepperoni is made of a mix of cured beef and pork seasoned with paprika and chilli pepper. It has a smokey taste and a bright red colour. It is usually sold in thin slices but can also be sold whole or in sticks. Its a popular pizza topping but it can also be used in sandwiches.

Pepperoni takes its name from the Italian word ‘peperoni’ which means bell peppers.

Pepperoni is a processed meat which is widely considered to be unhealthy. They usually contain high levels of preservatives and salt. Various grains are used in their manufacturing which means pepperoni is not gluten free.

Pepperoni has a high-fat content of which most are saturated fat.

According to the NHS is it safe to eat cured meats like pepperoni while pregnant, however, as mentioned before it isn’t the healthiest option.

Pepperoni is also pretty calorific, there are about 504 calories per 100 grams of pepperoni.
