Oregano is a herb used in many different cuisines, it is especially common in Italian and Greek cooking. It goes well with meats like lamb and chicken, tomato-based sauces and it is commonly added to pizzas.

Oregano plants are small shrub with small oval leaves which carry the most flavour. When in bloom, Origano has small pale pink or purple flowers. Oregano has a strong almost peppery taste with slight citrus notes.

Oregano can be used both dried and fresh. Unlike most herbs, the flavour of oregano increases when it is dried. There are a few different varieties of oregano that differ slightly in shape, size and flavour.

Botanically Oregano is known as Origanum vulgare which means “joy of the mountains.” in Greek. Which may explain why it’s such a common seasoning in Greek and Mediterranian cooking.
