It may also sometimes contain caraway, ginger, cloves, coriander or caraway. It is primarily used in baking as it has a warm, aromatic smell. It is a common ingredient in cakes, biscuits, cupcakes, cookies, gingerbread and loaf cakes like banana bread. It can also be used as a seasoning in savoury recipes.

Mixed spice substitutes

If you can’t find mixed spice you can make your own! Simply combine equal parts of cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. You can also add extra spices to taste!
