Bolognese sauce is a classic Italian recipe which incredibly popular in the UK. Know in Italy as ‘ragu’ alla Bolognese’, it is traditionally served with flat pasta like tagliatelle and pappardelle or fettuccine, or tube shapes, like rigatoni and penne. Outside of Italy, it’s commonly served with spaghetti.
A good bolognese sauce is cooked slowly allowing the flavours to fully develop. The ingredients vary but traditionally bolognese has finely chopped onion, celery and carrot, meat usually beef or beef and pork and a tomato sauce.
Other recipes less traditional recipes include ingredients such as mushrooms or lentils.
Bolognese is really easy to make and it’s delicious! We have tried to make the original recipe as healthy as possible by minimising the oil and using more vegetables!
Simply add the pasta of your choice and serve or alternatively, you can use it to make lasagna!
Finely chop onions, carrots and the celery.
Add the oil to a large saucepan and heat over a medium heat. Add the vegetables and fry until soft, stirring continuously.
Add the minced beef and stir until it has evenly browned.
Add the white wine and reduce.
Add the passata and the tomato puree, stir and leave to cook with the lid on.
Add the sugar and season with salt and then continue cooking with the lid on.
