Porridge is a super healthy breakfast option that goes well with a huge array of toppings.
To make a truly great bowl of porridge you have to get two things right. The first thing is the porridge itself, the second is the topping! This recipe only has three ingredients, oats, milk and a pinch of salt.
Porridge is one of those things that can be a bit boring but with a little imagination and creativity can be transformed into something spectacular! The aim of this recipe is to give you a great base which will allow you to add all manner of wonderful topping combinations to make your breakfast that little bit more special.
Oats are a nutritional powerhouse and are incredibly good for you but tend to be a bit dull on their own.
Classic toppings include jam, compote, a swirl of honey, golden syrup or simply a sprinkling of brown sugar.
Nowadays people are adding fresh fruit like bananas, raspberries and strawberries, dried fruit like raisins or sultanas, nut butters like peanut butter or almond butter, chopped nuts, coconut shavings, spices like ground cinnamon or other flavourings like cocoa powder.
We add a tiny bit of salt to this recipe to bring out the flavour but it can be omitted if you are making this recipe for a baby (over 4 months of age) or a young child.
To make this recipe vegan simply replace the milk with your favourite non-dairy vegan milk substitute!
Add the milk and the oats to a saucepan. Bring to a boil and stir occasionally.
When boiling turn down the heat slightly and stir continuously.
When the porridge is at your desired consistency add the salt and turn off the heat.
Spoon into two bowls and add the rest of the milk.
Top with almonds.
